FAQ

Do you need a passport?

Yes with at least 6 months of validity from the date of departure.

Do you need a visa?

Yes, and we take care of that for you. Just submit your passport bio page and your flight itinerary 3 weeks before departure.

Are vaccinations required?

The Yellow Fever shot is required unless you have an exemption from your doctor and the typhoid fever shot is suggested.

Is flight included?

Flight is not included but we can assist with setting price alerts.

Do I need travel insurance?

It’s always a good idea to be covered in case of unexpected events.

What if I am traveling solo and don’t have a roommate?

All journeys are priced based on double occupancy. We will do our best to pair you with someone or inform you in advance that we have not been able to secure someone which may require converting you to single-occupancy.

How do I get from the airport to my accommodation?

We provide roundtrip airport transfers.

What currency do they use in Ghana?

The local currency is cedis or ghs.

What language do they speak in Ghana?

Ghana is an English-speaking country, the native primary language is Twi. We offer a Twi for Travelers course to learn basic phrases

What is the weather like?

The weather in Ghana is warm year round but expect temps to a high of 90 degrees and 75 degrees at night.

How much should I pack?

This is a preference question but you can prepare at least 2 outfits/day. One for during the day in the warmer weather and something to change into at night for evenings.

I’ve seen a lot of people wear white on their journeys to Ghana? Is that required?

It is tradition to wear all white to the castles. It is a sign of respect. We actually recommend it.

What are some cultural norms and etiquette I should be aware of?

Do not use the left hand. Always shake, hand off and receive with your right hand. Elders are highly respected, look them in the eye and greet them with respect.

What type of physical activity can I expect?

Based on the excursions there will be quite a bit of walking and other physical exertion. You can expect to walk 2-3 miles on average over the course of a day, navigate steps, get in and out of transportation, and manage your personal belongings without assistance.

What essentials should I bring with me?

We recommend sunscreen, a hat, comfortable shoes, bug spray, and any necessary medications. Your doctor may also recommend stomach medication, malaria pills taken leading up to your trip and something like travel ban which can be purchased on Amazon. We have a curated Amazon list of basics we can share

Can I get cedis when I arrive and how much money should I bring?

US cash is only recommended in crisp $100 to exchange once you arrive. Exchanging any other bills or bills that are not in great condition will be difficult. You can withdraw money from local ATM’s but check with your bank for fees. Bring enough money for meals (budget $10-15/meal) and money to spend on souvenirs as well as tips for the tour guides and driver at departure if you would like.

What about refunds?

Refund & Cancellation Policy

At Welcome to the Motherland, we pour our hearts into creating “deep-cut,” immersive journeys to Ghana. Because we secure high-quality accommodations, private transport, and expert local guides well in advance, our cancellation policy is designed to protect the integrity of our group experiences.

1. Non-Refundable Deposit

All deposits are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable. Your deposit secures your spot and allows us to begin the logistical planning of your Journey immediately.

2. Tiered Cancellation Fees

If you must cancel your Journey, the following fees apply based on when we receive your written notice:

  • 91+ Days from Departure: 50% refund of your balance (minus deposit).
  • 61 – 90 Days from Departure: 25% refund of your balance (minus deposit).
  • 60 Days or Less from Departure: 100% Non-Refundable. No refunds or credits will be issued for cancellations made within this window.

3. Third-Party Financing (Affirm via QuickBooks)

For travelers who choose to pay for their Journey over time using Affirm:

  • Interest is Non-Refundable: Any interest paid to Affirm is a cost of the loan service and is not refundable by Welcome to the Motherland or Affirm.
  • Administrative Fee: All refunds processed through QuickBooks/Affirm are subject to a 3% administrative fee to cover non-refundable merchant processing costs.
  • Loan Adjustments: Once we trigger a refund in QuickBooks, Affirm will automatically adjust your remaining loan balance. You remain responsible for any balance not covered by the refund.

4. Travel Insurance Requirement

We highly recommend that all travelers purchase comprehensive “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) travel insurance. This is the only way to protect your investment should life take an unexpected turn.

5. Unused Services

There are no refunds for “no-shows” or unused portions of the trip (e.g., if you choose to skip a scheduled activity or leave the tour early).
